What to pay attention to

  • BMI is a screen, not the whole picture — waist size and body composition matter too.
  • For hiking, add 2–3 strength sessions a week to protect knees and ankles.
  • Weigh yourself at the same time of day and watch the trend, not daily noise.

How BMI is calculated

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². It is a population-level screen: it does not tell the difference between muscle and fat. Very muscular hikers often read as "overweight" without carrying excess fat.

  • Underweight: below 18.5
  • Healthy range: 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight: 25 – 29.9
  • Obese: 30 and above

Waist-to-height ratio is a simple complement: keep your waist under half your height. It flags fat around the middle, which is linked to heart and metabolic risk.
